Activities
We have been carrying out different activities for the welfare since its initiation in order to fulfill the objectives. Until April 2009 we cared for about 40 children living with us ageing 3 to 14 year old and belonging to remote districts of Nepal. In April 2009 the number of children in our house has been reduced to 20, to comply to government standards of space, hygiene and care (the children who left us have been placed in other orphanages with their agreement and in coordination with the child welfare council, government of Nepal). We have been giving education to them by recruiting two ladies teacher engaging one in the morning and another in the evening in two shifts separately. The majority of them have been studying in local English Medium Schools.
Funding of Organization
HORAC is established, governed and was initially solely funded by Nepalese citizens. For its entire income HORAC depends on Nepalese and foreign private donations, as the organization receives no recurring subsidies or donations from donors of NGO’s. For years the local community has been our major support, through mostly in-kind contributions of food. Over the years the private donations from foreigners, and one-off donations from Nepali NGO’s have become a crucial part of our income, and we also receive advice and guidance from several of them, including from expatriate families living in Nepal. The organization is also funded through membership fees, although this is currently a small percentage of our financial needs. We have also tried and may try again to raise income through cultural programme etc. We run on a monthly budget of about 150,000 – 180,000 Nepali Rupees per month, or 4-5$ per child per day (excluding some investments we have to make by summer 2009 due to stronger enforcement of government regulations).
Request for Donations
We face many challenges in lodging, fooding, and education, health care including finance. Even though, we have been managing and running this organization, we request heartily to all our well wishers, colleagues, friends, donor agencies to support our organization. Furthermore, we cordially request our donors to donate us for the welfare of our children. We heartily welcome and respect with warm reception any guests who wish to visit our organization. We expect that this will increase mutual respect and appreciation and will yield many suggestions and feedbacks to improve our organization. Persons who make regular donations are welcome to correspond with one or more of our children and witness how they develop.
