Diederik Prakke, (from the Netherlands)
I have been moved to see how dedicated Karna Bahadur Shahi and his wife care for the children at HORAC, under very basic conditions. I appreciate that HORAC has been a fully local initiative, but (as it is not connected to the experience and practices of the ‘development mafia’) also see its challenges in keeping a clear administration and communicating a consistent, straightforward agenda. In this sense the visits from March 2009 onwards by the child welfare council under the government of Nepal have not only been a big challenge, but also an opportunity. HORAC works hard to fulfill criteria on space, beds, number of toilets, water points, kitchen hygiene and employment of caregivers and an accountant. Through Retina (HORAC’s accountant since April 2009) I have regular contact with HORAC, giving suggestions on how to develop and present HORAC, which I believe are well received and beneficial.

We will be thinking of you and praying for you. Keep in touch.

February 8, 2009, I have visited your house several times this last week; and could even join you to your church. I was really moved by what and how you manage this whole orphanage. And I really want to work out plans how to help you further. We will do this together with my son, Diederik and my husband whom you haven’t met yet and Stephen and Judy.
My very best wishes,
Anne Saltet (Netherlands)

I volunteered at HORAC about a month ago, and was given the kind of hospitality you actually wouldn’t think could be possible. It was amazing to experience how naturally generous and friendly everyone was to you.. I was very happy and enjoyed my stay from the beginning to the end of my volunteering (1 month later) at HORAC. I highly recommend this place to do volunteer work, if you have in mind to do so. The children are adorable and very playful, the staff is friendlier than you can imagine and all in all is this place possibly the best place in the world to volunteer work.
And perhaps most important of all: Your help is needed.

The staff are caring and helpful and you will be treatet like the king himself.
Everyone who has the energy to give a helping hand should spend some time here. The smiles on their faces will make your day.

(from the Finland)
This is our last day in HORAC. Three months have gone so fast and it is so hard to leave the children behind because they have given lots of love to us. We have learnt so much from them. Horac, it is like a big family and we are now apart of it. Yesterday we went to the well to watch children bathing. Older girls washed the younger ones and it was nice to see how much they care for each other. Everyday they are smiling, I must ignore my tiny problems in Finland and be like them. We will miss their hugs in the morning and kisses in the evening. Each of the children have now a special place in our heart. This has been once in a lifetime experience, we hope that you too have a chance to come and search a little bit perspective to a life. This will change us for good. We are so glad that we did this. Thank you for your hospitality, every rice meal that you offer to us and those sincere smiles which we shared with you. And it was our pleasure to teach the children, because they were eager to learn and well behaved. We want to also thank HORAC’s staff, the hard workers, who helped us to do our laundry and looked after our happiness and that we would feel us secure and comfortable. Dhan ya bahd!
Miss you already
big hugs
xxx
